My Ultimate Game

While reading reddit.com the other week I came across an interesting question posed on reddit.com/r/gaming. What game would I want to play for all eternity if I only could play one game, assuming that said game would be updated forever (http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/s3kti/if_you_had_to_choose_only_one_videogame_to_play/).

I would like to change the questions slightly, from a specific game, to a type of game. Specifically, tabletop Role Playing Games (RPGs) like Dungeons and Dragons.

For those of you who have never played one of these games, they are social games akin to the computer RPGs (for example, Baldur's Gate, Skyrim, and Diablo), with a group of players. However, the real key to the tabletop version of RPGs is that the "Computer" is another person, also known as the Game Master (GM). This is the best part of tabletop gaming. Having people play all of the rolls means that the game is as linear, or not, as needed. If a player wants to go into a bar and drink for the rest of the day, then the GM can make that happen.

I've noticed that TableTop gaming is making a comeback as of late. Dungeons and Dragons is not the only gaming system available. There are quite a few game systems, ranging from the complicated Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 1.0, where a large number of multi-sided dice are required, to the simple GURPS model, where all you need is three standard 6-sided dice.

While following the core rules of each type of RPG is interesting, they are not as interesting as the real reason that I play. The stories, the plot, the friends, and the ability to completely immerse yourself into an alternate world.

I recently downloaded the quickstart quide to the Dragon Age RPG, by Green Ronin. I have never been a DM before, but as I have some previous knowledge to the plot of some of the missions, I feel that it would be better if I took the reigns with my friends. If anybody would like to play a game with me, using Skype or some other technology, I would love to organize a game. Please leave a message here or send me an email and I'll get it set up.
